At a time when complex algorithms dictate taste and determine which show will become popular next, there's some comfort in the fact that a multicultural, largely subtitled, and decidedly analog historical drama can still become a hit. The drama series, which takes place in 17th-century Japan, captivated viewers and critics across different cultures by creating a deeply immersive world. The bilingual show premiered on FX and Hulu in early 2024 and, later that year, won a record 18 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Open Ko-LLM Leaderboard2: Bridging Foundational and Practical Evaluation for Korean LLMs

The Open Ko-LLM Leaderboard has been instrumental in benchmarking Korean Large Language Models (LLMs), yet it has certain limitations. Notably, the disconnect between quantitative improvements on the overly academic leaderboard benchmarks and the qualitative impact of the models should be addressed. Furthermore, the benchmark suite is largely composed of translated versions of their English counterparts, which may not fully capture the intricacies of the Korean language. To address these issues, we propose Open Ko-LLM Leaderboard2, an improved version of the earlier Open Ko-LLM Leaderboard. The original benchmarks are entirely replaced with new tasks that are more closely aligned with real-world capabilities. Additionally, four new native Korean benchmarks are introduced to better reflect the distinct characteristics of the Korean language. Through these refinements, Open Ko-LLM Leaderboard2 seeks to provide a more meaningful evaluation for advancing Korean LLMs.

Love, Death & Robots Is Growing Up

WIRED

Netflix recently released Season 2 of Love, Death & Robots, an anthology show that adapts short stories into animated films. Science fiction author Zach Chapman thinks the new season is a big improvement over Season 1, with fewer episodes that feel silly or underdeveloped. "I do think that these stories are way more consistent," Chapman says in Episode 469 of the Geek's Guide to the Galaxy podcast. "I wouldn't say that there's an episode that I didn't like in this season, whereas there were quite a few that I didn't like in Season 1." Geek's Guide to the Galaxy host David Barr Kirtley was pleased to see the show move in a more serious direction, after a first season that seemed primarily aimed at teenage boys. "This show started as an attempt to reboot Heavy Metal, so it did have that kind of aesthetic," he says.

What Is em Virgin River /em , the Show Topping Netflix's Charts? Who Are the Virgins?

Slate

Lately I've come to think of the list Netflix provides on its homepage of its Top 10 most popular shows and movies at any given time as the streamer's version of the roll call at the Democratic National Convention this summer: Taking it in, one can only marvel at what a big country this is and how many, many different people, with very different entertainment preferences, occupy it. Where else does one find prestige programming like The Crown and The Queen's Gambit cheek by jowl with docufiction about aliens, a Christmas movie from 20 years ago, and, always, between one and five options you're convinced don't actually exist beyond their thumbnail images? For the past week or so, the honor of most fake-seeming show on the list has belonged to something called Virgin River. In contrast to the months-long publicity campaigns that precede some Netflix releases, others, like Virgin River, just seem to show up one day, their Rotten Tomatoes pages suspiciously lacking in reviews. With its blandly scenic setting and its generically good-looking leads, Virgin River feels, even more than most Netflix shows, like it could have been generated entirely by artificial intelligence.
